Las Vegas - The Frontier 18 Hours - Gilleys

According to The Frontier, they will close officially at one minute after midnight tonight (one minute into Monday).

Guests must check out by noon today (Sunday 15 July 2007).

The gift shop is rather bare.

Sigma Derby now has 2 of 10 spots broken. The overnight crowd was so "Gilley's" that Sigma often only had one or two players.

A number of people were escorted off the property by security in different incidents which seemed to all come from inside Gilleys (located in The Frontier). By the way, just to be clear, I am talking about very early morning Sunday - a few hours ago.

At around 3:45 a.m. a fight broke out in Gilleys. A shirtless man was brought out of Gilleys and cuffed against what I believe was a penny machine. Soon thereafter others involved in the altercation were removed.

There were several security related incidents involving people who appeared to be drunk and stupid; and perhaps angry. That is not a combination seen too often at 4 in the morning is it?

One seemingly happy drunk near Sigma Derby repeatedly made as if he was riding a horse. I wished that security would have thrown him out, but apparently being a happy idiot is not an ejectable offense.

Las Vegas Boulevard outdside of The Frontier had a constant flow of pedestrian traffic, between 3 and 5 in the morning.

A Rat Pack Tribute Band is to perform at The Frontier tonight, to close out the place. I believe that it will be the same guys who performed at The Stardust closing, briefly. At that time, they were technically good, but no one cared much, and the other band who later marched the crowd out did almost all of the entertainment.

Having a Rat Pack tribute band is too artificial for a closing. The closing is real. The performance sort of isn't. if you know what I mean.

The only thing about this which is engaging, is that the band will have a Sammy Davis Jr. and the real Sammy Davis Jr has performed at The Frontier.

I will be on the closing of The Frontier throughout, and will certainly be posting following the close which is less than 18 hours away.

Thanks for the pix you are providing. I have stayed at the Frontier for 30 years and it is breaking my heart to see it go. I knew it would happen some day since all of Vegas is changing to mega resorts. It is the end of an era for me. I'll be out there next weekend but too late for the closing. I will be able to attend the auction preview day. Please let me know if you hear if the employees were given a severance package of any kind. When I was out there in early June they had not heard. Thanks again for the updates.

You are very welcome for the pix and coverage.

The latest word I heard on severance is that it will range from a max of $8000 to a low of $300 depending on tenure. This was written in the Las Vegas Review Journal yesterday (Saturday).
