The Jim Johnson Las Vegas Photograph Collection - Coming To RoyVegas Soon

Las Vegas, Nevada
Coming soon to http:/royvegas.blogspot.com, the Jim Johnson Las Vegas Photograph collection.  Here we see the Riviera advertising Bobby Vinton and Milton Berle.  Well, the Riviera has outlasted Milton Berle who left us in 2002.

This through the windshield shot is a cropped, sepia'd color shot.

When I publish the collection, in a week or so, all the photos will be presented in full as taken.  Additionally we will look at particular areas of interest in any photos which warrant it, and many do.

Such as this photo.  Small part of a much larger photo.

This is Las Vegas Blvd, looking north, I believe 1979 or close to it.  The Silverbird, seen behind the Riviera later became El Rancho.

Notice no Stratosphere yet.

Also notice the models of cars driving on Las Vegas Blvd.

Do make it a point to bookmark this site or get on the feed.

Lost Las Vegas Photo Collection Discovered

In October 2007 a fan of this blog gave me a disc of photos he had taken during various trips to Las Vegas.  Jim Johnson of Pennsylvania is the photographer of this (cropped) photo of The Mint, and approximately 58 others on the disc.  He said that I should use them as I chose.

I may have posted one in 2007.  As well at the time however, I slowed down on this blog greatly because I didn't have the time.  The disc over the next few years became lost.  Recently I found this lost disc, and looked over this photo collection again.

It is like taking a walk back in time in Las Vegas.

Some of these Las Vegas photos are from 1979.  The Atari 2600 was still a big deal in 1979.

Taking photographs used to be involved..  I've shot digital, 35 mm, 110, and 126.  I still have a package of individual flash bulbs (not cubes) that I used with my 126 camera in the 70s.

When you took photos during a trip, there was wait time before you knew how they came out.  The film often traveled back home with you, before you would drop it off for developing.  Finally after a few days, you would pick up your developed photos, and while looking at them, remember your trip.

So from a roll of film, (likely Kodak) that sat on a shelf in some store in 1979, a man took photographs of Las Vegas, probably flew with the film home, waited while some store got it developed, and now decades later, these stored paper photographs are in digital form and are a sort of Las Vegas time capsule.

In 1979 your phone was at home, and your camera probably needed help to flash.  Bulb, cube, flip flash, whatever.

I'm not too fond of flash though.  It has it's use, certainly, but why not capture natural lighting whenever possible?

I digress.

Now that I am being somewhat more active with this blog, it is almost time to publish the recently rediscovered Lost Las Vegas Photos of Jim Johnson.

Here is a cropped photo of The Mint.  I will release the uncropped when I publish the entire set, probably next week, over a period of 7 days.

Thank you Jim.

First Friday - First Vegas Burn - Lucky Lady Lucy - Las Vegas Burning Man

First Vegas Burn at First Friday in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Friday 2 March 2012 was the return of First Friday in Las Vegas, Nevada; a night of activity in the Las Vegas Arts District.  On this most recent First Friday, a version of Burning Man "Lucky Lady Lucy" was constructed, performed around, and ultimately burned to ash.

Las Vegas Strip From Industrial - Night

Las Vegas, Nevada.  This shot is a few years old, and was taken from the west side of I-15, a few blocks north of Tropicana.  Ansel Adams is being advertised on the Bellagio monolith.

Since I-15 is between the camera and the Las Vegas Strip, this photo has a quiet observer feel to it.

Happi Inn Las Vegas - PS Where's The Ferris Wheel?

The Happi Inn Las Vegas was located at 3939 Las Vegas Blvd, across the street from Mandalay Bay, with its blinding video screen - the Mandalay Bay death ray.

A cursory examination of online reviews seemed to regularly score the Happi Inn with 2 to 3 stars out of 5.  Patrons of the Happi Inn must have been 40% to 60% happi with their accomodations.

It didn't look like a happy place, but what the hell do I know from the outside looking in?

The Happi Inn was demolished in 2011.  The site now awaits construction of a Ferris Wheel.  Thus far I understand there is concrete and a gear.

Gamblers General Store - Las Vegas

The Gamblers General Store is located on Main Street, north of the Stratosphere.  Their book selection seems smaller than it was a few years ago.  It is a worthwhile place to visit.  Don't confuse it with the Gamblers Book Shop, which is a different place.

Boardwalk Las Vegas - Dizzying Top Level Of Self Parking

The top level of the Boardwalk self parking was dizzying as a result of the Monte Carlo being right there.  The angle of the top ramp, and the sudden appearance of the Monte Carlo loomed like a giant.  Vertigo.
