Las Vegas - Absence of Frontier

From the location which was the Desert Inn (and is now Wynn), to the location which was The New Frontier.

Las Vegas - Frontier - Defunct And Gone

At last The Frontier is no more; only the signs remain.

Las Vegas, Nevada, The Frontier On 1 January 2008

In these shots of the present state of The Frontier, a security guard is sitting on a chair. By my estimation, the location of the guard is within a few feet of where one of the old timey cowboy slot machines were located.

Happy New Year From Las Vegas 2008

Happy New Year 2008 from Las Vegas, Nevada.
As can be seen in the top two photos in this post, the main entrance of The Frontier (front valet entrance) does not exist any longer.

Las Vegas - The Frontier Is Faceless

In order to amplify the significance of this post, there is no accompanying photograph. (Not today anyway.)

The "face" of The Frontier is gone. I am referring to that remaining front wall of The Frontier which can be seen in the last few posts on this blog.

The north entrance, which was near the arrow sign, is gone, completely. No doors, no walls, no entryway, no executive office rotary telephones.

The attached front wall going all the way to the front valet area is gone. The front entrance is gone.

It is all gone, except for the skeleton of the remaining (shorter) hotel buildings, and the sign.

Las Vegas - Frontier Demolition - Executive Office Phone

There is nothing much left, in a tangible sense, of the interior of The Frontier. There are still some sections of outer wall which remain up, (as a shield between pedestrian traffic and the demolition work occurring on the other side of the wall), but it is nothing more than an empty face; like the bank building at Rhyolite.

Photographing the north entrance, I saw something interesting in the rubble. A traditional rotary wall phone, with a sign above it: EXECUTIVE OFFICE.

Astounding!

I love traditional rotary phones, but I'm nostalgic. It is amazing to me that on The Strip, this phone with sign, lasted to 2007.

Las Vegas - Frontier Demolition - Phils Angus Steakhouse

The final days of December 2007 are here, and The Frontier is still in the process of being razed.

Phil's Angus Steakhouse at The Frontier had an entrance path and sign on the Las Vegas Boulevard side, not far from the north doors. That section of building has recently been semi-demolished.

Las Vegas - Stardust and Frontier Flashback

Prior to the implosion of The Stardust hotel buildings, many of the surrounding structures were razed. This photo shows The Frontier as seen from The Stardust before The Stardust was imploded. Now both are gone.

Frontier Las Vegas - Front Valet Entrance

The main entrance of The Frontier (Las Vegas Boulevard side) with parking valet roof area has finally been demolished. As well the north double door entrance appeared ready for demolition early yesterday afternoon, and may have been razed by now.

I drove past yesterday but as of right now do not have photos of this development to post.

Frontier Las Vegas - Demolition Continues - 7 Dec 2007

The demolition of The Frontier continues. Here are 4 shots I took on Friday 7 December 2007.

The north wall is down. Only the entrance door area remains on the north side. The wall which had the giant Gilley's ad (and 2 others) has been knocked down.

The front entrance doors remain, but there is nothing behind it. Look through the doors and you will see that you are looking right back outside again.

Frontier Las Vegas - Demolition Update 11 October 2007

I suppose that I must make a few posts because the people who rip stuff off from my blog (Hello France!) might otherwise not have any fresh material.

My dear readers I again apologize for my reduced posting. It will pick up again as I reorganize my life for increased time demands.

The present state of The Frontier as of my visual inspection done early Thursday 11 October 2007 is thus:

  • All exterior lights are off. For a long time, the lights at the front valet entrance, as well as the nearby sidewalk entrance, remained lit. No more. The signs are still there, but the exterior of the building is now 100% dark.

  • The front valet structure/entrance (weather roof) remains intact.

  • The rear valet entrance structures as previously noted are completely gone.

  • Most glass still remains on the building. However, there are many sporadic windows on all sides which are open, broken, or removed.

  • There are no longer any open-air rooms to be seen from the rear of The Frontier. As seen in my recent posts, it was possible to see furniture and room structures where the exterior glass had been completely removed. That line of rooms have been demolished. The walls and internal items are gone. Small bulldozers are parked in their place.

This is all I have time for now. I have more to post early tomorrow, on this and other stuff. I will also be catching up on email and laundry. And perhaps sleep.

Frontier Demolition Update As Of Wednesday 3 October 2007

Here is the state of The Frontier as I photographed it on Wednesday 3 October 2007. It is a good thing that they are moving slowly as I am still not blogging at full speed.

The front of The Frontier is rather untouched. There are individual windows out, but it is largely intact. The sign is still up. The front valet area is still standing. Almost all of the non-tower buildings are still standing. As previously mentioned, the rear valet structure has already been demolished. That is the only structure which has been demolished thus far.

Inside, I can see and hear debris falling internally from a good height. I do not know, but suppose that an elevator shaft is being used to drop debris. So although many windows are still up, there is more internal demolition than can be seen.

Still though, I certainly do not see the implosion taking place before 13 November 2007, and I will venture to speculate that the building might not be ready to be imploded until after 13 November.

In fact, let me go on the record as saying that I believe that the implosion will take place later than 13 November 2007. That, of course, is just my own guess.

Frontier Las Vegas - Almost As It Was

This is as fresh as it gets. The Frontier as phoographed yesterday afternoon.

As with many demolitions, the front of The Frontier is being kept as untouched as possible, for as long as possible, while the majority of activity occurs on the backside.

Most visitors to Las Vegas do not venture on Fashion Show Drive, because there is obviously nothing to see there, (and the sidewalks on both sides are noncontinuous at points).

I walked up Fashion Show Drive, and got these, and many more photos of the demolition of The Frontier.

In a little while, when the building is far more gutted and bare than it is right now, it will not be as striking for me to look at The Frontier. When the building is a standing shell, awaiting implosion, it will already be dead.

Right now though, The Frontier is still alive, as it is taken apart. Take a look at the rooms which have had their outer walls removed. One of them still has a television.

The place is real. It is almost as it was.

Las Vegas - Frontier Demolition Picks Up And RoyVegas Slows Down

In this substandard photograph the backside of The Frontier is seen with the rear valet structure completely removed, as well as the structure which extended from the building to the valet area.

Also note the glass removed on some lower levels as well as some upper levels.

-

This blog has slowed down quite a bit in the last week or two. This is a result of my life having become superbusy; not a loss of interest.

It is only a temporary slowdown.

-

The one year anniversary of the closing of Elvis-A-Rama (on Industrial) is coming up on October 1st. The building is still there. The signs are still there. But Elvis is not.

The one year anniversary of the closing of The Stardust is coming up on November 1st. Echelon Place construction is underway.

-

Las Vegas has been getting a bit cooler recently. After living in the 100s for a few months, a 70 degree night feels cool.

Las Vegas - Frontier - Rear Demolition

This photo is from the early hours of 12 September 2007. The lower level floors have had their glass removed.

As of right now, the entire rear valet structure is gone completely.

My time is stretched so thinly this week that I do not have a photo of The Frontier with the rear valet structure gone. Of course I will. Just not today.

It is raining in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas - Quick Fix - Frontier Bottle

A shot looking north on The Strip, in front of The Frontier from May 2007 when The Frontier was still open. It is entertaining how the newspaper machines (of one variety or another) are used as tables, as if a cocktail waitress walks Las Vegas Boulevard collecting the empties.

This Las Vegas quick-fix has been brought to you by RoyVegas; blogging about the insignificant since earlier this year. (Taking photos much longer.)

Frontier - Fire

Television news reported that there was a fire at The Frontier on Wednesday during daylight hours. Information was brief, but apparently debris outside the building caught fire and the building was on fire as well. The sprinkler system apparently still works; I wonder if that was the first time it has been activated in a fire.

I do not have pictures, but no doubt some will surface as the news had video.

Frontier Las Vegas - Mattresses And Windows

It is as if The Frontier was turned into an internment camp, and a riot ensued. Fenced in. Some windows out, others broken. Mattresses piled high around the perimeter. Chairs and other vaguely discernable pieces of furniture scattered about. Carpeting ripped up and piled with other trash on the ground of what was the vicinity of the main entrance valet area.
